The Past

I am currently sitting outside a cafe in Cooma, the "big" town near the village of Nimmitabel, where I grew up. I"m back for my school reunion (too many years to acknowledge)!

Yesterday afternoon I spent an hour wandering down the main street. Nothing has changed other than what is now in the shops. It looks the same, but feels different.

I then drove out to Nimmitabel to revisit places we lived when I was a child. I haven't been down these roads for many years, but memories of trips in the school bus & family car came rushing back. A house that my childhood friend lived in now lies empty and broken.

The landscape beautiful after much needed rain is beautiful. The gums that are burned into my memory are beautiful.

The rusted and neglected mailbox at the gate makes me smile and feel warm.

I then drive back into Nimmitabel - a broken town, almost a ghost town. The pub long closed, no general store or post office anymore. The bakery and a few other little shops are trying desperately to hang on. While the view remains relatively the same, there is no soul left here, a once vibrant village full of life and community is a memory. I feel sad to see this is what has happened to my "home" town.

I venture down to the Club, the only place left for locals to gather. I walk in cautiously, it had been a VERY long time, will there be anyone I know? The lady behind the bar instantly recognises me - I am home! I spend the next two hours chatting to the "old" locals, friends of my school friends, friends of my parents (who have sadly passed away many years ago).

On my drive back to Cooma I reflect on my afternoon. I feel heartened that even though things have changed dramatically for those living in Nimmitabel, there IS still spirit to be found.

Sourdough Success!

My bread-making skills are getting better! I have just invested in proper bread baking tins and another recipe book - Wild Sourdough, which is full of beautiful recipes I can't wait to try. Over the weekend I baked ciabattas, which were fantastic and a sourdough sandwich loaf - which actually looks like a loaf of bread I would buy at my local bakery - I am SO chuffed with myself!

This loaf was beautifully high, light and fluffy and the girls loved it!  Next challenge ..... hot cross buns!

I decided on Friday that storing my bread wrapped in a tea towel was just not good enough and that I should make little "bread bags" to store it in.  So off to Spotlight to find fabric, which proved to be more difficult than I had imagined!  I wanted a mid-weight "lineny" type of fabric, of which there seemed to be none!  After about an hour wandering around aimlessly I decided on three pieces of fabric.  This is the end result ....

Aren't they sweet?  They are super easy and take about 10 minutes to make.  I made some for my lovely neighbour who got me started on making bread, and another beautiful friend who is baking.  They both want me to make and sell them .... something to think about.

Well got to go - ripe starter is calling my name ..... another sandwich loaf is on its way!

New Lounge

Not starting the year off very well - so much for my resolution  to post more regularly!

I'm very focused on getting my house in order at the moment.  I have FINALLY got my new lounge - I have only been waiting for about 3 years!

It was ordered way back in October, and arrived last Tuesday - I love it!  I'm now in the hunt for new cushions, coffee table (old one is now too big) and new entertainment unit - I REALLY don't like this one ....

I just wish I could wave a magic wand and have everything done.
